Made using Ableton Live, Native Instruments - Reaktor and a few other plugins.
I'm going to add some touches of African percussion, my own voice and some quirky little synthesizer effects to punctuate it but the essence is there.
Here are some shots of the most recent live gig I performed at Glitch Bar in October. Big thanks to Jed (pictured in top photo) for organising the whole night. Was a great night, Zen Paradox performed a very well polished gig. I have a recording of my performance but am yet to render it to disk.
Here's a new track I've started working on on the weekend. I really like this track. I've got some vague ideas for a video clip which involves busy streets/machinery and traffic lights forming patterns of human faces.
Here's the first part of a DJ mix I recorded on my computer using Ableton Live whilst playing at a small bar in Melbourne (Australia!) called 'Glitch'.
"DJ'ing using a computer!!??. That's not DJ'ing!!", I hear you say. Times have changed my friends.
What I'm doing could be labeled MP3J'ing+effects but I'm hoping to make it more like live remixing. I've used looping/fast forwarding and other effects to allow me to extend or remove certain sections of the songs in such a way that I'm controlling the composition more easily than I normally could using turntables.
Whilst I'm not using many of the features of Live I have designed some little effects that add a kind of rhythmic stuttering effect and have embellished the mix with the odd flourish of Reverb (ie the sound of a musical instrument projected into a 3 dimensional space/room) and a stuttery 'Gate' effect. I think I went a bit overboard on that one a little ;)
I'm not going to hide behind the technology and profess myself to be a mix master because beat mixing is a virtual no-brainer using Live.
1. Fits in my shoulder bag with headphones.
2. Enables me to focus more so on composition given the ability to remove and extend sections of music at will.
3. Allows me to access to my complete musical collection which I've archived to MP3.
4. Ability to drop in short samples and add audio effects on the fly to add spice to the mix.
My DJ alias is Konnichi Wa, which for those of you unfamiliar with Japanese means 'good day' or 'hello'. Those with an attentive ear may notice a sample I've dropped into the the second part of the set singing "Ko-ni-chi-wa, Ko-nichi-wa". It's a fun name and hopefully a little catchy.
Unfortunately due to size contstraints on Vox (25MB files) I had to split up the mix into two parts. Any feedback welcomed.
The 'Uncle Schubert's House' name came from a short chord progression which comes in after a minute or so and is heavily effected with a warped delay effect . I'm not sure if it's exactly a Schubert phrase or not. See if you can spot it.
